Student writing and A.I.: teacher questions
- Q1
How can I tell if a student used AI?
Look at how the writing came to be, not only at the finished essay. Authentically is built to show the teacher what was observed while the student worked on the assigned Google Doc. If a student uses an A.I. or writing tool, we let you know, along with what they asked, and what the tool's response was.
- Q2
Is Authentically an AI detector?
No. An AI detector reads the finished text and estimates whether a machine wrote it. Authentically does not judge writing style or give a score. It is built to show teachers observed facts about how the writing was produced, and the teacher decides what they mean.
- Q3
Does Authentically use AI to analyze students?
No. Authentically does not use A.I. to analyze students' writing or behavior, or to make judgments about students. It is built to report what was observed, and the teacher decides what it means.
- Q4
Are AI detectors reliable?
A detector's score is an estimate, not proof. Reporting has described honest students being accused and edited A.I. text passing. Authentically is built to show what was observed while the student wrote instead.
- Q5
Can Google Docs detect AI?
Version history in Google Docs shows how a document changed and when. It does not show where pasted text came from, or what a student asked an A.I. tool and what it answered. That is the information Authentically is built to give the teacher.
- Q6
Can I see copy and paste in Google Docs?
Yes, with Copy / Paste, one of our five flags. We let you know if any copy and pasting was done on the student's document. We also let you know the source of the text that was copied and pasted, so the teacher can make an informed decision about the authenticity of the student's writing.
- Q7
Does it need Chrome or a browser extension?
No. Authentically works without a browser extension and does not depend on Chrome or any particular browser.
- Q8
How do I prevent students from using AI?
Authentically does not lock down a student's computer or block tools. It is built to give the teacher information to apply their school's policy.
- Q9
What if a student writes while Authentically isn't running?
If a student works on the document without Authentically monitoring it, we give the teacher the text changes made while it wasn't monitored.
- Q10
How can students prove they didn't use AI?
Authentically is built to give the teacher a record of how the document came to be. Time it wasn't monitoring shows as unmonitored, never as a clean record, so a conversation about a student's work can start from what was observed.
- Q11
Can my school use Authentically now?
We're in a closed beta. Schedule a demo, or join the waitlist and we'll reach out.
