Student writing in the age of A.I.: a one-page overview

  1. The problem

A score is not the story

A.I. tools are a click away while students write. AI detectors read the finished text and give an estimate. Authentically is built to show teachers what happened while the writing was produced, so decisions start from observed facts.

  2. What teachers see

    Five flags

    • Copy / Paste. We let you know if any copy and pasting was done on the student's document. We also let you know the source of the text that was copied and pasted, so the teacher can make an informed decision about the authenticity of the student's writing.
    • AI & Tool Usage. If a student uses an A.I. or writing tool, we let you know, along with what they asked, and what the tool's response was.
    • Untracked Changes. Untracked Changes acts as a fallback, providing the teacher with text in a student's document with no verifiable source.
    • Unmonitored Session. If a student works on the document without Authentically monitoring it, we give the teacher the text changes made while it wasn't monitored.
    • Apps Accessed. We provide information on the apps running on a student's computer, making it easy to ensure that a student's writing is their own.
  3. What it is not

Not a detector, not a lockdown

Authentically does not score writing or decide whether a student cheated, and it does not lock down a student's computer or block tools. Authentically works without a browser extension and does not depend on Chrome or any particular browser.
